Bing Chat Launches: SEO Implications

Microsoft and OpenAI made the biggest search announcement of the decade earlier this month, and Bing Chat — Microsoft’s conversational search experience built on a next-generation OpenAI model — is rolling out in waitlist preview right now. After a week of testing on our team, here is what is real, what is hype, and what marketers should be doing differently before Google responds.

What is Bing Chat?

Bing Chat is a conversational AI experience integrated into Bing search. You enter a query in natural language, and instead of (or alongside) traditional blue-link results, you get a synthesized answer with citations to the source pages. You can also continue the conversation, refine the answer, and ask follow-ups.

A direct answer: Bing Chat is Microsoft’s AI-powered conversational search experience, launched in limited preview in February 2023. It uses a next-generation OpenAI model to synthesize answers from indexed web content and cite the sources it draws from. It runs alongside the traditional Bing search results, not as a replacement.

The product is being rolled out via a waitlist. Microsoft Edge users with Bing as the default search engine get prioritized access.

How does it differ from ChatGPT?

Three big differences.

First, Bing Chat is connected to the live web. It can answer questions about today’s news, current product prices, and recent events — things ChatGPT cannot do without plugins.

Second, Bing Chat cites its sources. Every claim links to a specific source page, which the user can click through. ChatGPT, by contrast, generates text without citations and routinely hallucinates references.

Third, Bing Chat is integrated into a search engine. The traditional blue-link results are still there. Bing Chat is an additional surface, not a replacement.

What does this mean for SEO?

For the first time in 20 years, there is a credible second search engine experience. Bing’s market share globally is roughly 3% to 6% depending on the source. That is small, but Microsoft is making a serious play to grow it, and the answer-citation model means even small share matters because each cited source gets visibility.

A direct answer: Bing Chat introduces a new SEO surface where being cited as a source in an AI-generated answer is the equivalent of ranking in the top three of a SERP. Sites with clear structure, factual accuracy, and topical authority are getting cited disproportionately in early testing.

In our testing across 50 commercial queries this week, Bing Chat cited an average of 3.4 sources per answer. The cited sites tended to share several traits: clear H2/H3 structure, direct answer-style content, schema markup, and recognized brand authority in the topic area.

Should you optimize differently for Bing Chat?

Not differently — better. The optimizations that make a page cite-worthy in Bing Chat are the same fundamentals that already help with featured snippets and People Also Ask boxes:

  • Clear, scannable question-and-answer structure
  • Direct 40 to 60 word answers immediately after question headings
  • FAQ schema and Article schema on key pages
  • Authoritative, factually verifiable content
  • Strong domain authority in the topic area

If you are not already writing for featured snippets in 2023, Bing Chat is the second reason to start. Google’s responses are coming — probably in a matter of weeks or months — and they will follow similar patterns.

What does the user behavior look like?

Early testing shows Bing Chat users behave differently than traditional searchers. Sessions are longer. Queries are more conversational. Click-through to cited sources happens, but at lower rates than traditional SERPs.

The user pattern we observed: open with a broad question, refine through follow-ups, then click through to one or two cited sources at the end for verification. The conversational layer absorbs the “browsing” behavior that used to happen across multiple SERPs and pages.

This is the central tension for publishers: Bing Chat is genuinely useful, but it shifts value from clicks to citations. Sites that depended on top-of-funnel SEO traffic are going to feel it first.

Will it grow Bing’s market share?

Possibly. Microsoft is bundling Bing Chat with Edge, with Windows 11’s taskbar search, and with the consumer Microsoft 365 apps. The distribution is real.

Whether users switch from Google depends on whether Google ships a comparable experience quickly and on whether Bing Chat avoids the kind of stumbles that have characterized other Microsoft search efforts. Reports of weird and occasionally combative Bing Chat outputs are already circulating this month.

What is Google likely to do?

Google reportedly issued an internal “code red” in December and has reorganized teams around accelerating its conversational AI work. The market expects a Google response within months. Whether that response is the long-rumored “Bard” product or something built on a different model is unclear as of February.

A direct answer: Google has not yet shipped a competing product, but reporting from The New York Times and CNBC confirms internal teams have been reorganized to accelerate conversational AI work. An announcement is widely expected in the next few weeks or months.

For SEO planning, assume Google ships something in 2023. Build for the patterns we already see in Bing Chat — structured content, direct answers, citations to authoritative sources.

What should small businesses do right now?

Three practical actions for February 2023:

  1. Get on the Bing Chat waitlist. Test it against your own brand and category queries. See whether you are cited and which competitors are.

  2. Audit your top SEO pages for citation-readiness. Clear question headings, direct answers, schema, authoritative facts.

  3. Stop thinking of SEO as just Google. The next 18 months will likely include a real, separately-optimized second engine experience.

Will Bing Chat affect local SEO?

Not directly in this version. Bing Chat is focused on informational and commercial queries. Local pack experiences in Bing Maps remain the same as before. But the model that local SEO depends on — clear NAP, authoritative citations, strong reviews — translates well to AI citation behavior.

In our limited testing of local queries this week, Bing Chat often defaulted to traditional Bing Local results rather than synthesizing an answer. Local search behavior may be the last surface to get the full conversational treatment, simply because intent is so specific.

Does Bing Webmaster Tools matter again?

Yes. If Bing’s surface is going to matter for citations and AI-generated answers, then keeping Bing’s index up to date is suddenly more important. If you have not logged into Bing Webmaster Tools in years, do it this week. Submit your sitemap. Check the Bing-specific crawl errors. Bing has supported IndexNow since 2021 and the latency from publish to index is fast.

FAQs

Is Bing Chat replacing Bing’s traditional results?
No. Bing Chat is an additional surface that appears alongside traditional results, not a replacement.

How do I get on the Bing Chat waitlist?
Sign in with a Microsoft account at bing.com/new. Microsoft Edge users with Bing as default get prioritized.

Does Bing Chat use GPT-4?
Microsoft has confirmed it uses a “next-generation OpenAI model more powerful than ChatGPT and customized specifically for search.” The model has been widely reported to be a variant of GPT-4.

Will my Google SEO efforts also help with Bing Chat?
Mostly yes. The on-page fundamentals — clear structure, direct answers, schema, authoritative content — translate. The off-page signals are weighted differently.

Should I optimize for citations specifically?
Yes. Citations in AI answers are the new “top three rankings.” Write content that can be quoted directly: facts, statistics, clear definitions, structured answers.
