AI Overviews vs Featured Snippets: How They Differ and Why It Matters
AI Overviews and featured snippets both sit at the top of Google’s results, but they’re built differently and they reward different things. A featured snippet pulls one passage from one page and displays it in a box; an AI Overview synthesizes text from several sources into a new summary and cites them alongside it. Confusing the two — or optimizing for only one — is why some pages that used to own a snippet have gone quiet.
What’s actually changing
The mechanics are genuinely different, not just a rebrand. A featured snippet is a single extracted passage, chosen from a page that’s already ranking well for the query, and it disappears the moment a better-matching passage on that same topic overtakes it. An AI Overview draws from a wider pool of pages — sometimes five, sometimes a dozen — stitches a new answer out of them, and lists which pages it drew from in the citation panel below the text. A page doesn’t need the #1 organic spot to get pulled into that citation panel; it needs a passage clean enough for the model to lift and unambiguous enough to trust.
The two also aren’t mutually exclusive, and that’s the part most sites get wrong. Google still shows a classic featured snippet on plenty of queries with no AI Overview at all, and on others it shows an AI Overview with no snippet in sight. The queries most likely to carry an AI Overview tend to be the ones with some ambiguity or multiple valid angles — comparisons, nuanced definitions, “how does X differ from Y” questions like this one — while pure factual lookups still lean toward a plain snippet. Writing content that only works for one format leaves the other on the table.
Why it matters for small business
For a small or mid-size business, this matters because the two formats have opposite effects on traffic. A featured snippet still usually sends a click — the user wants more than the boxed answer, or wants to verify the source. An AI Overview citation, by contrast, often satisfies the query on the spot; the user reads the summary and never scrolls to a website at all. That’s a real trade: you can be cited and correctly credited and still see fewer visits than the old snippet used to send.
Chasing clicks by ignoring AI Overview optimization is still a mistake, though, because visibility inside the citation panel is becoming a brand-trust signal in its own right — being named as a source, even without a click, keeps a business in front of buyers early in a research cycle. The businesses handling this well write for both outcomes: a direct, extractable answer for the snippet, and clearly attributed, well-structured supporting detail for the Overview’s citation list.
What to do in the next 30 days
For most small and mid-market service businesses, the 30-day move is to establish a baseline. Document where you are today — current ranking on 25-50 high-intent keywords, current Google Business Profile score, current review velocity, current monthly lead volume. Without a baseline, every subsequent intervention is unmeasurable.
Pull the specific queries where you currently hold or want a featured snippet, and check the live results for whether Google is also showing an AI Overview on those same terms — the two behave differently often enough on the same query that you can’t assume. Where an AI Overview shows up, look at which sites it’s citing and what format that content is in, usually a direct answer in the first sentence or two followed by specific supporting detail, not a long narrative wind-up.
The third 30-day move is to read enough about the discipline that you can have an informed conversation with the team or agency doing the work. The marketers who get burned by mediocre execution are usually the ones who can’t evaluate whether the work is good or bad — and the simplest hedge is twenty minutes a week of reading the industry research from real practitioners.
AI Overviews and featured snippets aren’t the same battle, and treating them as one is how pages lose ground on both. If you want a read on which of your target queries carry which format, and whether your content is structured to earn either one, a short answer engine optimization review usually surfaces it fast.
