How to score yourself

Count one point per checklist item you can honestly mark done.

  • Most items unchecked: start with Part 1 only. Foundations gate everything else — crawlability, schema, entity consistency. Skipping ahead to GEO tactics on a broken foundation wastes the effort.
  • Foundations done, AEO items patchy: your highest-leverage week is rewriting your top ten pages so each answers its core question in the first paragraph. That single pattern feeds AI Overviews, featured snippets, and chat citations at once.
  • Nearly everything checked: your gap is measurement and iteration. Fix a monthly prompt-panel review and start expanding the question set you compete for.

Re-score quarterly. AI search surfaces change fast enough that a passing grade in winter can be a failing one by summer.

Frequently asked questions

What is the single highest-impact item on this checklist?

Answer-first content on the pages that matter. Every engine — Google AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity — lifts self-contained passages that resolve the question cleanly.

Do I need new tools to execute this checklist?

No. A crawler you already have, Search Console, and a monthly habit of asking the engines your own buyer questions cover the essentials. Tools add convenience, not capability.

How long before AI engines reflect my changes?

Google surfaces typically move with normal recrawl cadence — weeks. Chat engines that lean on web retrieval can pick up changes quickly; those leaning on training data lag months. Optimize for retrieval first.

AI Search Readiness Checklist

A free, practical checklist from Frostbite Marketing. Most of it costs nothing but time. Built to pair with The State of AI Search 2026 — the data on why this matters.

Why this checklist

Customers increasingly get an answer from AI (Google’s AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity) instead of a list of links — and the businesses named inside that answer win the click. Getting cited is a discipline with two parts: AEO (Answer Engine Optimization — Google’s AI results) and GEO (Generative Engine Optimization — chatbots). Work top to bottom; the early items matter most.

Part 1 — Foundations (do these first)

  • ☐ Claim and 100%-complete your Google Business Profile — every field, correct categories, all services, hours, and fresh photos.
  • ☐ Build a steady flow of genuine reviews — ask every satisfied customer; aim for consistency, not a one-time burst.
  • ☐ Make your business name, description, and services identical everywhere online (this “entity consistency” is what AI uses to trust who you are).
  • ☐ Confirm your site is fast and flawless on mobile — slow/broken pages get skipped by users and crawlers alike.

Part 2 — AEO: get surfaced in Google’s AI Overviews & AI Mode

  • ☐ Add structured data: Organization, LocalBusiness (or service-area business), FAQPage, and Breadcrumb schema.
  • Answer the real questions customers ask, in plain language — AI extracts clear answers, not marketing fluff.
  • Lead each page with a direct, concise answer to its core question (then expand below). AI pulls the top, tight answer.
  • ☐ Keep facts accurate and consistent across the site (what you do, where, for whom).
  • ☐ Maintain strong reviews and ratings — AI weighs trust signals heavily.

Part 3 — GEO: get cited by ChatGPT, Claude & Perplexity

  • ☐ Publish an llms.txt (and llms-full.txt) at your site root so AI engines can find and quote your key info.
  • ☐ Write factual, well-structured content that’s easy to quote — short paragraphs, clear headings, specific facts.
  • ☐ Earn mentions and citations on reputable third-party sites (directories, press, guest articles) — chatbots trust what others say about you.
  • ☐ Keep your entity consistent (same name/description/services everywhere) so models confidently attribute info to you.
  • ☐ Have clear, quotable answers to the “best / top / near-me [your service]” questions your buyers actually ask AI.

Part 4 — Measure what actually matters now

  • Monthly AI-visibility test: ask ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google’s AI Overview the questions your customers ask — do you appear? accurately? next to whom?
  • ☐ Track citations, branded search, and review velocity — not just keyword rankings.
  • ☐ Use a free AI Citation Checker to monitor whether AI assistants mention you.

If you only do 5 things

  1. Complete the Google Business Profile.
  2. Add FAQ + Organization structured data.
  3. Collect 10 genuine reviews.
  4. Publish an llms.txt.
  5. Test monthly whether AI names you.
